Features

Installation is simple. Basic Qdig installation is simple — just put the script in a directory on your web server that contains some image files and/or subdirectories with image files, then browse that directory’s URL to see the images and/or links to the subdirectories. Qdig is a one-file program, and doesn’t require a DBMS. Writing resampled images to disk sometimes requires some simple additional setup (create a directory and set permissions on it twice), which is even possible to do without shell access.
Galleries are easy to use. Webmasters, gallery visitors and gallery owners should all find the script friendly and usable. For webmasters there are plenty of internally documented settings for tweaking the gallery look and feel and setting defaults. Gallery visitors are given simple controls for navigating through the images and optionally for changing some preferences.
Galleries are easy to manage. Gallery owners can manage their galleries with an FTP or SCP remote file management program. It’s possible for non-technical users to manage their own galleries. For most installations there’s an easy way to add captions to image pages via a link to the admin.php companion script.
Thumbnails images are created automatically. Qdig can be configured to generate a thumbnail image for each image in the gallery. The size and quality level of the thumbnails is configurable. Wrap setting for thumbnail rows is also configurable. Generating thumbnails requires Image Magick or PHP’s commonly available GD extension and write permissions by the server.
Alternate-sized images are created automatically. Qdig can also be configured to generate smaller-sized versions of an original image. Resampling images to similar sizes gives your gallery a consistent look and conserves bandwidth. The sizes, quality levels, and sharpening for Small, Medium, Large, and eXtra Large images are configurable. As with thumbnails, generating alternate-sized images also requires Image Magick or PHP’s GD extension to convert (resample) images.
Presentation is consistent. Qdig allows the visitor’s browsing experience to be more consistent from one photo to the next. A gallery with widely varying image sizes is not as pleasant to look at, but automatic resampling of larger images means your images will match up with one another. This requires minimal preparation effort on the part of the gallery owner.
Large collections can be organized. You can have a nearly unlimited number of images in your galleries. Qdig will find photos in any directory below the one where the script is installed.
Bandwidth is conserved. With image resizing enabled, Qdig can be configured to limit the maximum image size offered for viewing. Even the eXtra Large version of an image will be a resampled image if the original was huge (say, an image directly from a digital camera). The allows webmasters to prevent gallery owners from accidentally posting huge files and wasting bandwidth.
Screen area is conserved. Non-image output from Qdig takes up minimal space in the user’s browser window for a friendly viewing experience. Qdig tries to be efficient about how it uses your visitors’ valuable screen pixels so they can scroll less and view images more. This is also useful when the gallery is included within a larger page.
The full-sized image may be linked. Qdig can present the original uploaded image when the original is larger than the largest resampled image. This is useful when visitors want to print a photo or use the very largest size for desktop wallpaper.
Qdig is standards compliant. Qdig generates valid XHTML 1.0 output so pages should render properly in all sorts of browsers.
Qdig is a presentation software alternative. Use Qdig as an alternative to proprietary presentation graphics software for online presentations. Qdig presents your images as a slide show (not automatic yet) and you can include HTML in captions so you can power your point home using open standards.

Tested & Working

This label indicates that I could install the script without major problems and I could run the script without the need for major modifications to the original code (except for the usual configuration, of course). The label does, on the other hand, not indicate that scripts without this label would not work properly. The missing of the „tested & working“-label just indicates that I did not yet test these scripts.
